Every practice wants first-page visibility on Google. When patients come to the Internet, you want to be first in line to offer answers and booking options.

Earning a front-page ranking is rarely easy. To maintain top visibility, practices continually invest in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to improve and fine-tune their website.

To fully understand SEO, it's helpful to understand SEO terminology.  While all the talk of crawling and bots might make you think of a Marvel movie, these terms help us understand how Google functions and reacts to SEO efforts.

To best understand Google’s ranking process, let's break down 5 key SEO terms.

  1. Index: Google continually works to find and categorize (or index) all web pages online. The Index is where it stores all the pages it finds. Each page’s index entry describes its content and URL location.
  2. Crawl: Google is continually searching (or crawling) for new or updated web pages to add to its Index. Google discovers new pages by reading sitemaps, following links, etc.

  3. Crawler: automated software that crawls the internet to find and index web pages.

  4. Googlebot: The name of Google's crawler. You want Googlebot to be aware of your practice’s site.

  5. Google Search Console: Google offers a platform of free tools to analyze your website’s performance. Google Search Console allows you to determine if 1) Google can find your content and 2) evaluate your performance results. These tools can help find problematic pages Google is struggling to crawl,  point out issues (like meta description problems and spam violations), and identify top phrases/searches patients are using to find your site.
